We all want our kids to grow as readers, becoming confident and independent. Giving kids a balanced reading diet will do just this. A balanced reading diet means that they are reading books they enjoy, about a variety of topics, and those that are also a slight stretch.
A ‘just-right’ level book is at a level that your child can understand and comprehend, but challenging enough to foster growth without frustrating them. It’s not too easy, it’s not too hard, it’s ‘just-right.’
Our literacy platform will automatically match your child to ‘just-right’ level books so you don’t have to stress about how to do so. We will make sure they are reading books they understand while still giving them the option to read about the topics they love most.
The Lexile reading level system is a numerical framework that was created by the company Metametrics. Level levels Every book has a Lexile level, and every reader has a Lexile level. This framework helps us to match your child to books within their ‘just-right’ reading range. The higher the Lexile level, the more complex the book is, and the more advanced the reader is.
The best way for a child to grow their Lexile level is to read books that are in their Lexile range and also within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This range/zone is usually within 50 points above their Lexile level and 100 points below. We call books in this range Power Texts.
A child’s ZPD is the range of skills that a child can perform with support. This zone is just a little above their independent level, giving them some challenges, but not so many that they will become frustrated.
Our literacy platform is designed to provide your child with educational opportunities that are a slight stretch. This will help them to advance and eventually be able to complete these tasks on their own.
Within Lighthouse Reader children are required to read a Power Text (a book within their ‘just-right’ reading range) every other book. Then, they are able to choose whatever book they would like, also known as a ‘free choice’ book.
This way your child is guaranteed to read books within their ‘just-right’ range and grow as a reader, but also given the opportunity to read about topics that they truly love. This helps foster a love of reading and keep them engaged.
